NOVATO STUDENTS GIVEN OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE COLLEGE DREAMS A REALITY WITH AVID PROGRAM

July 05 00:46 2019

Novato Unified School District is putting students a step ahead by implementing the AVID program in six of its schools. AVID — Advancement Via Individual Determination — is a nationwide nonprofit organization that focuses on preparing students for their future in college, careers, and life. With 6,000 schools participating in AVID nationwide, nearly two million students are positively affected by this program.

AVID is an elective class for grades 6-12 designed to target and enroll students from the academic middle into a school’s most rigorous courses. Students receive support in the AVID elective class to complete a rigorous college preparatory path through tutoring and a proven curriculum based on writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading. Students in AVID work with their AVID teachers and tutors to make goals for their core classes and electives to accelerate their learning.

The mission of Novato Unified School District is to “provide an innovative and personalized learning experience for every student in a caring and supportive environment to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful and productive citizens.” This goal is supported by AVID’s mission to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID’s systemic approach is designed to support students and educators as they increase schoolwide and districtwide learning and performance. Professional development, resources, and support for educators is provided by AVID. AVID provides a scaffolded approach so that students have the skills to be academically independent and organized.

AVID students are typically minority, low-income, have special circumstances, or are the first generation in their family to attend college. AVID students demonstrate academic potential, desire, and determination. This college preparatory program is currently offered as elective classes at San Marin High School, Novato High School, Hill Middle School, Sinaloa Middle School, San Jose Middle School and Hamilton Elementary.
