A Diamond Dealer’s Guide to Fancy Color Diamonds

Exceptional Diamonds for Exceptional Value
Fancy color diamonds, also known as natural color diamonds, have become remarkably popular in the last ten years. But these unique diamonds have been around for centuries – they have long been treasured by royalty and serious gem collectors.

As per the Gemological institute of America “Of the millions of diamonds mined each year, only .001% can qualify as fancy colors and only a handful can achieve the top grades of Intense and Vivid.”  Natural Fancy Color Diamonds are known as the rarest gems in the world today.

All diamonds are assessed by the same four main attributes of diamond quality; Color, Cut, Clarity, and Carat Weight. However, unlike white diamonds where the 4Cs are of the same importance, the color of a Fancy Color Diamond is the most significant characteristic of all.

Diamonds come in almost every color of the spectrum, and some are extremely rare. Yellow canary diamonds, for example, are relatively common when compared with pinks, blues, greens, oranges, and reds. A diamond’s color is determined by the factors such as the presence of irregularities or chemical elements within the diamond’s molecular structure.

The color intensity of natural-colored diamonds can be graded as Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense, or Fancy vivid with Fancy vivid being the highest grade.  The deeper a diamond’s color, the rarer and more valuable it is.

Gall Raiman, Founder and CEO of Raiman Rocks, has worked with fancy color diamonds for over 30 years. Gall notes that in recent years more famous pink and blue diamonds have been at auction houses, showing that there is more interest in color diamonds as heirloom and collector’s items. “Fancy color diamonds have emerged as a favorite gemstone that outshines all other gemstones because of their unique glow and rarity,” says Gall. “And because they are so rare, they make a unique style statement when set in jewelry.”

Fancy color diamonds are coveted as engagement rings and family heirlooms, Gall explains, because, “No two colored diamonds are the same. Each colored diamond has unique inclusions, color intensity, and hues, which make them as unique as a fingerprint.” Many clients, Gall notes, are looking for stones that are one-of-a-kind. “For those who are looking for something truly special that reflects their lifestyle and individuality, fancy color diamonds can’t be beat.”

“While collectors have been buying up the rarest of the rare,” Gall continues, “diamonds with secondary hues and colors offer great value. At Raiman Rocks, we work closely with clients to help them find the perfect diamond. We offer free consultations, during which we educate clients to ensure they know what they need to before shopping.”
